The birth of Faculty of Psychology in Indonesia was pioneered by the scientific speech of Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso during his inaugural as Universitas Indonesia Professor at the 1952 Universitas Indonesia Dies Natalis ceremony in UI Engineering Sciences Faculty in Bandung (now ITB). In that speech, he, among other things, proposed the use of psychological examination to detect “the right man on the right place” and avoid "the right man on the wrong place, the wrong man on the right place”, as well as “the wrong man on the wrong place".
As the continuity of that speech, the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture (the PP&K Ministry for short) held the Psychology Assistant Course led by Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso. Not long after, the Psychological Institution was established under the PP&K Ministry. The institution’s status would later be changed to the Psychology Assistant Educational Institution directly under the Universitas Indonesia head. In 1955, the name and the status of Psychology Assistant Educational Institution were changed to Psychology Undergraduate Education under Universitas Indonesia’s Faculty of Medicine.
In the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture Decree No. 108049/U.U. Universitas Indonesia’s Faculty of Psychology was officially established in July 1, 1960. Therefore, 1960 was established as the birth year of Universitas Indonesia’s Faculty of Psychology with Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso as the first dean.
At the moment, Faculty of Psychology has six departments that represent the psychological branches. These are: Developmental Psychology, Education Psychology, General and Experimental Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and the Social Psychology. To respond to the society’s needs toward experts in psychology, Faculty of Psychology now offers Undergraduate Programs, that include Regular, Extension, and International Special Course (in cooperation with University of Queensland, Australia) programs; as well as the Postgraduate Programs, which include the Master Program in Science, Masters Program in Psychology, Master Program in Applied Psychology and the Doctorate Degree Program.
